As the puck was dumped into the SoupAStar zone, high-flying call-up Riley Pekar pressurde the defender behind the net and forced a turnover as the puck trickled into the slot. Cappy Marc Berthiaume reached for the loose puck and attempted a behind the back pass to Peakz who was able to get a shot off towards the goal. With the SoupAStar tendy out of position, it was a defender that made the save on the initial puck as he had the puck bouncing around his body. Unfortunately for him, Marc Berthiaume was ready and waiting for the puck to drop as he was able to smack the loose puck off the post and just over the line to give WWGRD the early lead.
This was a lead that would not last however, as the SoupAStars responded with two goals in the first half, including a lucky ass goal by Brian Goodchild as he batted a loose puck out of the air, something he couldn't do again if his life depended on it. WWGRD tendy Johnny Tracey did all he could to keep the boys in the game. WWGRD was grossly outshot in the first half, but Johnny was able to weather the storm and keep it a one goal game at the half.
The SoupAStars came out flying again in the second half, getting two more passed the Woodslee Wall before WWGRD finally had a response... or did they? Working on the Power Play, Marc Berthiaume was sprung in the neutral zone as WWGRD was able to catch the SoupAStars on a change and had a 3-on-1 into the zone. Berthiaume held the puck and waited for a lane to open up before sliding a pass through the defender and onto the twig of Douggie Lambier. Douggie deked to the backhand and slid a shot low on the tendy that he was able to get a pad on, but not completely stop. The puck was trickling towards the line before the goalies body covered the view of the puck. WWGRD celley'd to sell the fact that they had just scored, causing the referees to have a conference about the decision, even though neither of them were actually in the zone at the time of the goal and therefore in no position to make a call either way. Regardless of their positioning, the refs called it a goal, bringing the score to two goals at 4-2.
This however was as close as the hard-working team in blue would come to the first place SoupAStars, as they added a few late goals to make the score a 7-2 final. After the matchup, one player in particular wanted to make sure he got the credit he deserved for his effort in the W for his team. Ryan Sterling (@rsteez) tweeted: "I better get at least 3rd star on the blog write-up...#WWGRD #SoupAStars." Although no player on the other team has ever been named one of the three stars on this blog (with the obvious exception of Ron Weasley), Steezy might have had a chance to break the trend if he had buried on any of his 5 breakaways in the game.
After the game, assistant captain Sean Micelli and Captain Marc Berthiaume addressed the media. Micelli said, "We got on em early, popped a gino but after that we couldn't fucking burry on that vet between the pipes. We started trading chances with them, and with the skill they got, that's a recipe for failure." The kid with the golden flow then added, "It was a good test going into the playoffs and the fact we skated with em for a good portion of the game was a positive." The WWGRD Cappy told the media, "It wasn't our worst game by any stretch. They're the best team in the league and they showed everyone why. Johnny stood on his fucking head out there and kept us in it long enough, we just couldn't generate enough offense to beat a team with as much firepower as them." He then told the media, "We can't wait to get another shot at them in the playoffs," before drop kicking a camera and walking away. WWGRD now plays the waiting game to see who and when they play their first playoff game.
