Big Boy Brent Breaks Out, Locks Down Point for WWGRD

WWGRD made their much anticipated return to the ice for the second half of the UWIHL Season on Friday, January 17th when they took on the Angelwood Jacks in an afternoon affair. Fans filled the stands at Adie Knox for the 3:30 puck drop to watch two of the leagues elite teams look to start off the second half on the right foot. Unfortunately for the boys in blue, it was the Angelwood Jacks that came out flying to start the game. Fortunately for the boys in blue, they had the Woodslee Wall between the pipes.

Johnny Tracey turned away shot after shot as the Jacks hemmed WWGRD for the first 10-12 minutes of the game, as he was the only reason this game wasn't over before the ice had even dried from the pre-game zamboni. When WWGRD finally got their first good chance, they capitalized, and it was from somewhat of an unexpected source, at least this year. As the puck made it's way around the boards, the team's co-leading scorer, Dylan Berthiaume, fought to get it up and out to a streaking Brent Lozinsky. David Brent then carried the puck in on a 1-on-2 before snapping a wrister passed the Jacks tendy, tickling twine for the first time this season. The lead would be short lived, however, as the Anglewood Jacks would reply with 2 goals of their own to give themselves their first lead of the game.

It was a more predictable goal scorer that would tie the game back up for WWGRD. With the team finally establishing some sustained pressure in the Jacks zone, it was only a matter of time before they found the back of the net. With the puck along the boards, birthday boy Douggie Lambier passed the puck into the middle to the sharp-shooting Brandon Pancerny who quickly released a shot that the Jacks tendy was not ready for. We had a new game and were set up for an exciting finish down the stretch. The Jacks would take the first step, and took a 3-2 lead, but WWGRD wasn't going to let that stand.

The kid Brent continued his breakout game after some impressive puck movement on the powerplay. After countless chances were turned aside, it took a beautiful cross-ice feed from the birthday boy to the now-confident Lozinsky to create the tying goal. David's second goal of the game would be the last, and the two teams would have to settle for a single point to kick off 2014.

Media spoke with the games biggest story, Lozinsky, following the game. "It was great to finally get the monkey off my back, it was pretty much a Gorilla at this point." He then provided a positive message going forward, saying "2014 belongs to WWGRD. No Doubt." They then got to talk with veteran D-man Eric Bauer, who said "I thought we played hard, kept things simple and moved the puck well. I think we played well enough to win, hopefully come up with the same effort but a better result next Thursday!"

Bauer was referring to the teams next game, Thursday, January 23rd against the MF Kids. Action starts at 9pm as WWGRD will be looking for their first dub of 2014.
